Congress Greenlights Legislation to Make Public Epstein Documents

The Senate on Tuesday gave swift approval to a bill that will require the publication of case documents related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a almost unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a shift by the president and his GOP allies. Trump's team relented after an extended period of trying to forestall the joint action involving a controversy that has followed the president since his comeback to the White House.

Unanimous Approval in Congress

Senators proceeded by unanimous consent, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a recorded vote, expediting the process. Just before, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

Citizens have endured sufficient delay. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have waited patiently,” the top Senate Democrat stated in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to pass it unanimously. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”

Next Steps

The measure next will be sent to Trump for his signature. Trump indicated on the previous day that he would endorse the legislation.

Though the president has for months rejected the uproar over the authorities' approach of the Epstein case as a “political stunt”, he voiced approval for the legislation over the weekend, and announced he would give his assent if it reaches his desk.

Response

Democrats, along with victims and their advocates who were watching from a viewing area, cheered after the bill was enacted. The only opposition came from a Louisiana Republican, who expressed concern he feared the measure would disclose identifying details of witnesses, persons of interest and others involved in the investigation.
