Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
New research indicates that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using these medications must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
